Philosophically, my teaching methods, for the church anyway, are unorthodox. In each rehearsal I have Focus times - or mini-sermon times... where I am trying to teach Jesus’ way through  Love, Thy Will Be Done by Martika, or give kids a sacred perspective through a Dave Matthews song, or communicate a principle from the Sermon on the Mount through the Rolling Stone’s classic - You can’t always get what you want.  I do this because I believe that Truth can be found in any thing if we look.  And  I believe it is more important to teach them how to “look” than to make Methodists or even Christians of them upon graduation. To use an analogy - If the “Still, small voice of God” is like a message broadcast on a hard-to-find radio frequency (and it is indeed hard to hear today).  I can either teach them what I’ve heard, learned or read - -  or help them learn to find that frequency for themselves.  It’s the old “giving a man a fish or teaching him how to fish” thing.

My style and ministry bent is also reflected in the fact that I run a pretty messy program.  I want  kids in here that steal, do drugs, and have any of the other normal adolescent problems.   I’ve said it before - I believe the church is an emergency room clinic & I don’t want them to hide their blood.

But most important– beyond theology, teaching methods, and style, I am trying to “be” the  love of Jesus to these kids.   I want them to feel that love in this program– whether they are Christian or not– whether they have faith or not.

This  describes  my direction, and specifically my theology, my philosophy, my style and ultimately by objectives in there with these young people.  I believe strongly in what I do and why and how I do it.  And I’ve been doing it for 17 years. 

Over the past few years, I have been in more regular conflict (nearly constantly) with  the powers-that-be in the church (be it a committee, staff person, lay group or minister) over my  approach to the way of Jesus, and the objectives and style of my ministry.

That has become too uncomfortable.

And I am leaving for that reason.
